The Mumbai Sessions court postponed the hearing in the 2002 hit-and-run case against Bollywood actor Salman Khan to next month. Salman Khan who had rushed back to Mumbai on Saturday night (March 23) from the US for the hearing in the 2020 hit-and-run case ' did not appear in court today. However, his lawyer has asked for more time and the court has granted the request, and the charges against Salman will now be decided on April 8.

The Mumbai Sessions court was supposed to decide today whether to charge Salman with rash and negligent driving, or give a harsher sentence under culpable homicide not amounting to murder on the basis of new evidence provided by the police earlier in the year. While rash and negligent driving carries a maximum sentence of two years, if Salman is to be charged with culpable homicide not amounting to murder, the actor will be looking at a maximum of 10 years imprisonment.

Salman had earlier asked for a more lenient sentence from the Bandra Magistrate court, which passed on the matter on to the Sessions Court as it did not have the jurisdiction to hear the case.
